No you don't have to upload the items to paypal.. It is also impossible to do that. lol.

just upload your items on your site.. it should all be there.. paypal will only be for payment and nothing less..

You could hire a very good programmer to code it as auto-download
using api, ipn.

There are several other ways. These are some I have used in the past.
I don't sell anything anymore, BTW.

Put the download code on your thank you page. Sure, it means
maybe, someone, somewhere, somehow could get a freebie, but
I never had this problem.

You really need to include your email prominently on your sales page,
as some will not click on the return to merchant link. You should
spell this out to, like: be sure and click return to merchant or
continue after purchasing.

I used to make my thank you pages like this, really jumbled url:
domain.com/xahdsksjfiewweeopofkjsfoqwihwq.html

Second, you get an email from paypal, so then you email the purchaser
the goods.

Just use the option in paypal when you created a button to redirect user after payment to a specific page, however, I would suggest that you should have code sent manually to the purchaser just for security reason.

If you are using shopping cart, then integrating paypal as your payment option will do. I do it mostly on my sites especially those that are download based items and does not required shipment.
