How to change my homepage without losing SERP?

Hi

I'm a bit unsure about what would be the best method to keep my SERP.
My homepage ranks no.1 in google for its keyword but the homepage is a 700 word article.

I am currently doing a redesign of the website because I want to expand this 30 page website into a proper authority website.

To do this, I need to build a nice homepage in place of the current article.
I'm concerned about losing my SERP entirely though.
