If that site only has 3 backlinks, then simply build lots of backlinks to your site. Make sure your on page SEO is good, and you regularly update it with good content. I'm surprised a site with 24,300 pages(if I understood you correctly) indexed only has 3 backlinks though.

Main thing is on page optimization of website. So, to index more number of pages, it is important to have a good on page optimization of website. Second to beat your competitor you need to make high quality back links from theme based PR sites.

Are You sure there are only 3 backlinks? Remember that many backlink checking tools have stopped using yahoo site explorer to get their data, so it would be good to double check it. But if it's true and the keyword is not a brand name, You should check Nr.2 site in google for this keyword and see how much does it take to get to that spot. if ranked 2 site has huge amount of quality backlinks and still isn't ranking higher than site with 3 backlinks, there might be a problem for You too. |

Thing I forgot to add is the competitor website is mainly a forum and I've to make a forum too because of the niche market! About backlinks, I used "link:my-competitor-website.com" to get it Also, it's not an english website otherwise I bet there would be maybe more competition. Also the #1 is #2, #3 and #4 and it's not a brand name too and their domain name was registered on 24 March 2008 |

You need use Yahoo Explorer to check your back links. Your data about competitor's back links may not correct. I recommend you to check again this data before do the next step. And you may need time to beat them, it can not be done on one day or one week. You may have long term plan if you dont want give up .
