For google it does not matter if you have www or not in your url. What is important is to decide if you want your site with www or not before you start building your backlinks.

Agree it is all about backlinks. So if you link to 3w's then this is where you should have your site. The problem is if you link using both non-3w's. and 3w's as they are in effect for different sites. The best practice is to 301 3w' to non-3w's or vise versa to be sure you don't waste any links. |

Ok, thanks guys, i've been looking further into the 301 redirect. What about index.html and / can these be effectively considered as another 2 versions? Some websites are saying this is the case. |

redirect www to non www or the other way round is a must, otherwise if your site is with www and backlinks generated was to non www then it will be a waste of effort =)

Its important to let know Google that with and without www your site is same. So you need to do 301 redirection to rediect non www to www version.

Well, Google doesn't bother whether you have www with your website or not. But if you have both websites, that will impact negatively on your website... Your backlinks will split between both the versions and your main version won't get enough boost. Its better to promote one version either with www or non-www... You can do this by - Setting up 301 redirect from one version to main version - By setting your preferred version in Google webmaster tools |
