Well, Terry Kyle the author of Backlinks Hydra said that getting various links is great.

But forget that. Imagine what would happen if non-english links would hurt English sites: every schmuck would create websites in foreign languages, causing his competitors to plummet in rankings.

No backlinks are ever a bad thing. They are either neutral or helpful. You never get negative link juice. Spammy link building strategies will get Google's attention though.

The quality of the link will depend on the quality of the site that is linking to your site. The language of the site doesn't matter. The US is very diverse, culturally. It would be natural for a site written in another language, like Spanish, to link to a site written in English.

It's more valuable to get links from sites with the same language/geographic location because it's considered more relevant BUT it's the world wide web, an SEO friendly link from a different language/geo will still bring value, definitely not a bad thing.

Diversity is a nice thing in backlinks. I suspect it would be nice, though, if you understood what the anchor text meant.

It's a BIG BIG NO. Language is not a factor when building backlinks. You can still rank a website with a gibberish keyword. A backlink will always be a backlink no matter what language it is.

My former boss has given us restrictions on getting links from a non-english sites, he just said that it is not good for our site.

Though, I still suggest getting links from country that you are targeting.

I would recommend that you focus on getting links from sites of the same language, as this could throw a red flag otherwise. Plus it would not provide any benefit to the visitors of those other language sites. If ever reviewed it would be seen as an obvious attempt to cheat and you could end up like JCPennies.

I think it will add to the variety/diversity - which is a good thing... provided
1. They don't make up the bulk of the links to your site
2. They are from decent (preferably high trust) domains

If I were you I wouldn't make these the 1st links I build to a brand new site of mine though

IMO it cannot be a red flag - when Steve Jobs died do you think Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic etc websites will link to that first news item or not? Do you think that will devalue that news item by any chance?
