Default Will a Local TLD have an advantage in Google Places?

Hey Gang,

I know there's been many discussions in the past over whether a local TLD (.ca, .co.uk, etc.) gives the upper hand in getting businesses ranked in Google.

My question tho:

Given the option of primarily ranking a .ca (or local domain) vs the .com version...has been proven that Google will favour the local domain over .com in terms of Google Places listings?

Would it matter if it was Google.com or Google.ca being used if Google Places is looking for relevant local businesses to display?

I want to lean towards advising a client to focus on making his .ca domain name the primary domain (keyword rich) with the .com forwarding to the .ca...but I thought maybe I might see what others think first!

Anyone have thoughts on this?
