How soon after I build a site should I start building backlinks to it?

Right away. Especially using one of those lists of site valuation websites. thos can help get you some backlinks, look relatively natural and can help you get indexed.

A couple of articles or 3rd party sites like squidoo are also good ways to start off some backlinking without looking like you are trying to inundate Google with your backlinks immediately.

nice questions . You can build right away but with a little precaution .

First you can cretae social links which are very good at any stage : Twitter, Facebook, My space, Google +, Digg.
These kind of links will not harm you .

And of course after 2-3 days you can start building high quality backlinks High pr or edu
.

Build as many and as often as you like. Anyone who tells you anything different doesn't understand SEO.

Thanks a lot guys. That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure I was going about it correctly. I didn't want to get dinged by Google or anything.

You hear different people say different things. One says build 10+/- backlinks per day to make it look natural. Someone else tells you to use SEONuke or some high powered software to just massively backlink. They both seem to make sense and yet they both show proof that what they say is true. I think you gotta just not worry about issues like this and just make sure that you're doing SOMETHING every day to keep your business growing. If you do you'll make it.

A lot of people are overly paranoid about building backlinks. As long as you keep your pace relatively consistent you should be fine. In other words, try not to create thousands of backlinks in one day and none over the next week or two. Sure, sites can go viral. But I'm almost positive that Google can tell the difference between viral backlinks and manually created backlinks.

People will say different things. You should do your own tests. :-)

I'd usually start building a variety of links and then in a week or so ramp the efforts up. Make sure you've done your keyword research properly.

As soon as your done publishing your website. The earlier the better. Just do a constant and continuous linkbuilding campaign.
