How to rank in a specific country?

Actually, I already have a site which is already like 2 years and it's .com

My plan is to rank it much higher in a specific country (e.g au, ca, nz, etc.) any ideas?

Well I already have an idea but do you think this will work? I plan to buy a domain with .ca and host it under a canadian web hosting company and write blog posts with a link pointing to my .com site - will this work?

any other ideas?

The good thing is you have targeted English speaking markets. If you have the thought anywhere in your mind to go after China or Japan (if you're a newbie like me) do not waist your time.

The thing that I learned recently is to check how many buyers there are for the product or service you are recommending.

In most cases, you can't go wrong if you target the U.S. and some particular State if you have a "local" product like Real Estate or something.

I had a product that I guessed had the biggest market in the U.S. but with more research, I found out that the biggest market for that particular product was in the U.K. and that having a web site or blog with a .uk was the most profitable way to go.

Or, in other words, the best way not to spend unnecessary time, energy and resources promoting a .com, .net or .org site.

Your idea in getting a domain with .ca is effective and show Google that your site is located in the targeted country and target also the main product of your page as well as the right words in the site that is specifically in that country. These are the important factors that will improve your site's rankings in different countries and also a way to give a hand to all customers worldwide.

The problem is, for many English speaking countries you
need to have a business in that country, or live there, or
some reason for having a .ca for example. You can't just
go and get a .ca out of the blue.

But that would be the best way to rank in those countries.

The perfect storm for Canada, would be a .ca and a server
based in Canada.

Second best bet would be a .com, but server in Canada.

Google may rank sites by location of server.

Ditto for NZ, AU, etc.

So basically you just can't buy a domain with .ca if you do not have a business there right?

So do you have any other suggestions which we can rank better in google canada?
my idea is:
1. submit articles to article directories in canada (if there are)
2. forum posts on .ca forums

will this help: get a .com domain and host it under canadian web hosting? then will create a blog and write posts with a link pointing to my main site? will this bring my main site better rankings in google canada?

i think in different countries, the situation is different. such as a keyword has a good ranking in USA, may not good in china or other countries.
so, before you do it, you need do a research first, i mean keyword research.

if you want to target the local market for your site in such case you should do all offpage seo for the local market just like submit your site to the local Business directories and Article Directories.

Do not change your location in webmaster tools.

Building links from blogs,forums,article sites of ca will work good for ranking.

If you have a physical address in Canada and can verify Google places listing it will work very good for you.

Google does not rank sites by location of server. Bing ranks sites by location of server, hence the reason they stress geo tags. If you want to rank your site in Canada, go ahead with buying a domain with a .ca. but if you are pointing that site to your .com, then know all you are doing is creating back links from your .ca to your .com. The most important thing that you can do is submit both your .ca and your .com to the search engine by country; in this case google.ca. Do the same for the other search engines. Another tip is to do local directory submission so that you gain citations as an added bonus for whatever it is you are trying to sell.

However, if you are only going for traffic, then you have to do your keyword analysis based on that country and not local or global search terms based in the US. Each country has different quirks on how they search for terms, and especially in Canada where there is a mixture of both french and english terms.

The best idea I can recommend, submit all your sites directly to the search engine of that country, are start back linking in order to raise your rank. By doing this, you not only gain extra exposure by being listed somewhere else, you now are able to garner a variety of traffic.

Thanks for the tip. Building links in .ca sites is quite difficult. There are only a few .ca blogs, forums and article directories.

Thanks for the heads up! Well I guess I cannot buy a domain with .ca since we do not have an office or business residing in canada. So I'm left with submitting my .com site to search engine by country - how do I do this? can you help?

Host your website on the specific location server like usa, uk, au, etc. change geographical target in Google webmasters tools after that submit your site to the local Business directories and Article Directories.

Your idea appeals to me, but there are a few thing that you need to do for optimizing your website for specific region,
- Set your preferred geographic location in Google webmaster tools
- Get a country specific domain extension
- Submit your website to local search engines
- Submit your website to local directories
- Get backlinks from the target country websites

if you want to get rank in particular region then you need to get backlink from that particular region. for e.g
If you want to get ranking in Canada then you need to get links from Canadian website or sites whose server is in Canada.
Try to find directory, social bookmarking sites which are generating traffic from canada.
Do participate in Canadian forum so you can get some relevant traffic
