Anchor Text Overoptimization Penalty - Can I recover?

I got slapped with a google penalty. I'm still indexed but I rank on the last page for the keyword, so I'm pretty sure it's an algorithm penalty, but I'm not sure. I'm 90% sure it's due to overoptimization of my main keyword, which honestly I have not been careful with.

My question: Is it possible for me to remove the penalty? Right now I'm focusing on a variety of other keywords to even it out. Will that help, or am I basically screwed? Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's possible to recover. No guarantees, but it's very possible. You might even recover without doing anything. But diversifying your anchor probably will help.

First of all i will advice you dont panic much. It would have been great if you have shared your before and after keyword position. As i think something is going with google as even i share with you my experience since last 3 weeks i am even feeling so much keyword position changes for all keywords. Lets say my one keyword was on 9th position of google than it went on 3rd page than 7th and than nowhere in top 100 this lasts for i think more than a week but after 10 days now it is on same position and feeling this thing with i should say 40-50% of my keywords.

Also ya over optimization and using same anchor text its also not good you can use partial match or contextual to save your site from penalization
