Default Is too many links on my site Bad?

I would like to do link exchanges with other relevant sites. But I've heard that if I have over 100 links on my "links" page then it will negatively effect my rankings. Is there a way around this or does that mean I can only really do 100 link exchanges?

I do not think link exchanges are all that great anymore. No clue as to the limit of links on a page before you get a negative result but I do think you can find better ways of building those links. Better safe than sorry.

As mentioned - there is no set number of links you could have, and link exchanges can hurt your site...

Reciprocal links = no good..

Also, try to make sure the links you do have are relevant to your content.

Me personally...

I like to know my visitors that I worked hard to get are definitely viewing my offers and not just clicking away...

All just my opinion of course...

No, 100 links on a page is no more a guideline. Now you can have as many as required.

But, Google can intelligently distinguish between editorial and irrelevant links.

One advise, Do not jump into link exchange... It is strongly discouraged by Google and your website may get penalize for exchanging links.

Link Exchange is almost dead nowadays. Try to build one way link.

Making reference to having links on you site, I would keep it to a minimum for the reason of PR. One of the methods Google uses to determine the PR of a site is the amount of inbound links and taking into consideration the amount of outbound links which can diminish PR. If the out bound links are high then you could have PR evaporation.

Do what you are happy with, if you think lots of links will help your site, then by all means.

Letsurf,

Call me selfish, but I do may VERY best NOT to link out to other sites from our main pages. Link to your internal pages... that is fine.

100 links as a maximum is no longer valid (not sure it ever was to begin with anyway).

I could spend a couple of pages telling you about my linking strategy for our customers (both internal and external links) but I will say this:

1) Make sure your main menu is in a separate Class by itself.
2) Try not to link out to other sites from your key pages.
3) If you must link out... open up a separate tab or page. (Does not affect SEO, but does help with keeping your site open for your visitors).
4) "Consolidate" links if you can... meaning... if you have a Terms of Services, a Conditions page, a Refund page, etc... keep the individual links, but have them all go to the same page.
5) Put the most important internal links in your content higher up on the page.
6) Use keyword-rich anchor text in your content links.
7) And as some of the others have said... forget reciprocal links.

Hope some of this helps.

One way links is what increases the PR these days.
Link exchanges are the art of past decade Bro.
And to be honest, there are already too many one way link sites these days which are high pr. No need to do link exchanges.

There you go. You have completely different opinions...
For most websites too many links is bad. Obviously there are exceptions.
I'd like to break it up into 2 separate topics. #1 Too many outgoing links #2 recip links (link exchanges).
#1 there are sites that visitors visit only because of those outgoing links. thehun.net (warning - an adult site!) has been around for 15 years and they haven't even changed the website design since then. Thousands of links on the main page. Result: 200,000 daily visitors. Another site freeones.com (adult site) has million daily visitors. What does this mean to website owners ~$20,000 per DAY! Should they remove the outgoing links?
#2 If I own a hotel and a casino I will link from my hotel website to casino and vice versa. "When you come to play in our casino you can stay in our hotel." A valid reason to link the business websites together. Can't they do that? Well, since Google is not their master, they don't give a rat's ass what google tells them to do or not to do.
If you are a GoogleSlave do whatever they tell you, otherwise do what is best for your business and website visitors. (Caution: This will be considered a bad advice by most, since 99% of people in fact do depend on Google)

You cannot place an arbitrary figure on detrimental link figures. Like in economics the return from each link does decline after a while, but that figure is unknown by everyone except matt cutts et al.

As a rule of thumb, one way, inbound and relevant links will never do you harm.

Relevant link swaps are good, and you won't loose too much juice, as long as there relevant

non related inbound links aren't great, unless from a site with high Pagerank

non related link swaps are pretty useless

non related link swaps from low PR sites are less than useless, your site become confusing to spiders trying to index you. AVOID

Best advice i can give you is to spend most of your time writing quality articles and submitting them on ezine, go articles etc. If you can't write them, hire an article writing service.

Hub pages, Blogger and forums like this are great for back links too.

Hope this helps.

If we read and understand the Google Webmaster Guidelines, you will not see any statement saying that we should not get too many links for our site.

However, they have also stated that linking to bad neighborhoods will surely hurt our site. What do we do? I suggest you to get links as much as you can but you must ensure the quality of those links.

How? Well, if you based the PR of that page, you still might end up hurting your site. What I do is I just get links from non-spammy pages/sites. Though there are lots of factors that we need to consider when it comes to quality link building.

I'm just being practical to the extent that I don't spend too much time in searching for those "good quality links", I just consider them as an additional. If I notice that I have a chance to get juice from that page, I will do it as long as that particular page will not hurt my site.

Lets not talk about link exchange. In Pakistan google has banned a huge number of adsese account due to violating their policies.
Link exchange is against the adsense policies.

Matt Cutts has put 100 as a "guideline" for the maximum number of links on a single page, but that's all it is, a guideline.
