My boss has found an SEO strategy she loves. Basilcy we take one root keyword and a list of 100 cities and make one very similar webpage for each city. The pages are then semi hidden with a link in a footer to a list of cities that link to the different pages. I do think this might fall into the duplicate content trap, as well as being a little black hat. I find it acceptable that our website implement it as we can survive without the rankings plus it is her website. but when she starts to recommend it as a great SEO strategy to our website customers I really dont like it. I have told her several times that we should not recommend this tactic to our SEO and website customers, but she says "As long as it work she does not see a problem" and "that she is more concerned about doing what works than what is best SEO standards". I have seen a WSO from a respected warrior with a tool for doing this. What do you guys think. Is this sustainable, or will the websites get punished. I would like you support and experience as I have a bitter taste in my mouth doing this. |

It all depends, really. Your sites can go along happily for weeks and months and then wham get whacked on the head. I've seen it work for years and also seen it killed within weeks. So I'd personally have two similar sites so if one site gets buried, at least the other one still has some life within it. |

Do you know of any referances I can use to convince my employer to calm down with this strategy? Official resources from Google or real case studies will be apriciated! | |

The recently leaked document from google identifies this exact strategy as spam if I remember right. I'll have to go back and look at the document.

I would not think it would be effective, each page would have to be separately backlinked and stand on its own, it would not just absorb PR from the rest of the site, I would not think
