I have been using the Traffic Travis software to check SEO/Competition for a couple of keywords. I have noticed that Traffic Travis is giving other results than my "SEO for Firefox tool" from SEO book does. The SEObook tool is giving results which also includes the Yahoo Site explorer results. Where Traffic Travis tells me that a certain page has 230 backlinks, this SEObook tool tells me that this same page has only 5 backlinks. When I go to Yahoo Site Explorer to check this, SEObook seems to be right.. I am wondering if I do something wrong, because I have seen a lot of people recommending Traffic Travis and having good experiences with it.. Your thoughts or advice would be nice |

No tool is accurate, I both od the above AND Market Samurai, which also gives different results. So... Just KEEP BUILDING BACKLINKS! Personally I use TT for looking at my rankings. But it's up to you. PS. Traffic is more important than rankings |

I believe that Traffic Travis counts your internal links as well as the external links. It seams that every link tracking software gives a different count but just keep building those links because at least your doing something to promote you business and every back link counts!... |

I'm pretty sure Yahoo! site explorer has been unreliable for quite some time and they no longer officially support or update it, so it is becoming less and less relevant. Use opensitexplorer and majestic seo instead |

I combine the results of those two and the link: operator in google. I always figure that the highest number is the one that I have to beat for a given term, although the number I end up with is always going to be way higher than what I actually need to hit in order to rank #1. For instance, if OSI is showing 200 links, majestic is showing 300, and link: is showing 350 for the term "niche longtail keyword" then I know that by getting 350 links for "niche longtail keyword" I am going to be extremely likely to beat the competition. Of course, you have to weigh things like the PR of links etc, but that is another discussion entirely. |

this will be the right way of calculating indeed. However, I just quickly inserted the URL in Majestic SEO and found something: Majestic SEO gives the option to use a fresh and historic index. The historic index gives 230 backlinks and the fresh index only around 20 for the domain I am talking about.. Edit: I should only look at the fresh index right? p.s. Market Samurai allows me to change the historical index to fresh index.. and is also able to switch to yahoo site explorer. Unfortunately not OpenSiteExplorer aswell so this tool is probably the most reliable.

No tool is accurate and perfect, so it is better to do all things manually.

I like using Market Samurai better than Traffic Travis.

Traffic Travis uses Majestic SEO for its backlink data as YSE will be disappearing very soon. Majestic SEO historical index is very useful to see if a particular site has a whole bunch of spammy backlinks (typically, you'll see a huge drop between the historic and fresh) |
