Most of the bounce rate for my sites are between 30% - 40%

I don't think 55% is too bad, not bad enough that it would effect rankings.

Do you have many ads on the home page, such as Adsense? these cause high bounce rate.

Are you looking at your entire site or one specific page? These are two completely different factors.

In theory, 100% bounce rate could be brilliant. If users find exactly what they want, quickly and don't need to look any further.

But of course, in practice the lower bounce rates are usually better. Creating more pages and interlinking your content with "further reading" etc, is a good way to decrease bounce rates.

Also keep in mind, bounce rates will vary, depending on the niche.

As realmavrick says, a 100% bounce rate could be good. If your visitors come to your site and click on an ad, then they did what you wanted them to do, unless it is a pitch page.

I had a site that was doing 85% to 92% bounce rate and was real worried. But it wasn't that long until I was making $100 to $200+ per day from AdSense with that site. So who gives a crap about bounce rate?

54 percent bounce rate isn't really that bad. I know a lot of people that have much higher than that. I would almost consider it pretty decent or good depending on the site and content.

A high bounce rate can be a blessing as long as you have the traffic. I have one site with a bounce rate of 8%, but has huge loyalty and people stay on the site for days at a time. CTR on adsense sucks though.

Another site has over 50%, but CTR for adsense is about 3 times higher. Go figure!

Yup. The bigger the bounce, the bigger the bucks!

I'll tell you something else. Above the fold Adsense ads are not the best place for Adsense.
Best spot is a leaderboard ad directly below the back button. Create one for the left side, dropping straight down from the top of the browser page and another on the right side...for a uniform look.
You won't get many clicks on that right banner, but your left banner will beat out all your other Adsense ad clicks by 3 to 1.
I've tested this on numerous blogs and people's eyes may ignore all other ads on your site, but when they go to click that back button, if you have an ad right there, they can't ignore it easily.

I wouldn't be worried but if you have made any big changes in the recent time I'd reconsider them. Bounce rate is often high just due to the design. People will determine if your website is worth reading in about 1 second. At least I am.
Agreed. You need to get your visitors attention in the very first few moments... And 54% bounce rate is well, not bad.

Majority of my web sites that are making good monies have 80-90% bounce rate, I don't think you should be worried. For me 55% if very good.
