Default SEO Advice Needed...

I'm starting a new site and need some SEO help. While knowledgeable about SEO, it isn't my signature area of expertise.

I know of and have heard of individuals ranking high/well for keywords that were both of high and low competition.

Which is the better way to go? Highly competitive or Not so competitive?

I tend to aim for low competition keywords/phrases with at least around 10,000 global monthly searches. Again, I'm no SEO pro so all advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I have 50 sites.
10 are sites with the 80 thousand a day search range.
The others are in the 3000 to 7000 range.
This is a nice setup because the small range site bring in the same as the large sites.
No work on the small sites at all (auto blog).
Minor upkeep on the big sites.

you should go for the low competitive first, and build the other one in the same time

I always recommend a good mix of high and low competition keywords so that you can start ranking the easy ones quickly.

The higher ones will take a little more time but these can be longer term goals that will bring you a lot more traffic in the long run.

You will surely run out of steam if you aren't getting traffic and sales from the low level keywords while you invest in the high competition ones.

With everything Google is doing these days (a lot of people around here have suffered huge traffic drops and search results have been poor and bizarre to say the least) I would suggest that fervent prayer is about the best current SEO strategy!

In general you it is really dependent on your goals. If your goal is short term growth then ranking for low competition/low volume keywords would bring results faster but most likely result in lower sales (assuming this is what you want and of course assuming you do not stumble upon a diamond in the rough).

In general if your building your site out for the long term as an asset (which is what I would hope you are doing) then a sprinkling of high volume/high competition along with lower competition keywords would see that you start to see results fairly quickly while working towards the longer term goals. That being said all of this is very subjective since what your goals are for your SEO can be very different to what mine or someone else's would be but in general taking a middle path always helps.

depends on so many factors! i always advise to go for a mix. that way you cover all angles. key is always your on-site content. keep it static and you will suffer. add fresh, relevant content and you will be rewarded. no rocket science. deliver what your target demographic wants and you will be all good.

Thanks folks!

I'm always in it for the long term. So I guess I'm going the high road!

How many searches do you generally aim for?

I think this may help article exchanges : You've heard of link
exchanges, useless as they generally are .Article exchanges are like link exchanges, only much more useful. You publish someone else article on the history of pudding pops with a link to their site. They publish yours on the top ten pudding pop flavors in Laos or wherever with a link back to your site. You both have content and high quality links.

Titles for links. Links can get titles, too. Not only does this help visually impaired surfers know where you are sending them, but some search engines figure this into their relevancy for a page.

If you want to have asset I recommend high competition. It’s slower to grow up but getting a lot of traffic to the site. And it will produce high sales in the long run.

Low Competitive :
- Easy to rank
- Easy to get to top on google

High Competitive :
- Hard to get top on google
- Hard to rank
- But, when you rank lot of visitor means lot of money.

Instead of going for using high or low competitive keywords, create the keywords own. Observe the most highly entered word by people for their query in your field and use those words as your keywords, so this will provide the best result. As when people enter their query your site be shown in top results with the highly matched word.

start off with low comp first. Start ranking sites that have very low competition then from there you can start going after lower-medium competition. You do not want to go after high competition or even medium comp right away because you will really be competing with people with deep pockets and lots of experience.
