Leaving site alone

Hello,

My site has been gone from serps for a while. And I have understand that it's not google dance, I guess it some kind of penalty. I have added unique content and added several backlink, but nothing has been changed.

If I leave this site alone (because I want to move on with other projects), then IS there a CHANCE to come back where it was after a while?

How long has it been like this?Also make sure that you remove all the spammy looking links and have some fresh content with relevant backlinks from high PR sites and it should most probably return.
