Is it possible to break into high competition niches / keywords?

All,

I am stuck at the moment (im a newbie) in terms of attacking a niche.

From what I've read all over this forum and internet, a lot of marketers suggest choosing a niche that you have a passion for or you can deliver value to your readers i.e. you have some level of knowledge that you can pass onto others.

That is all when and good and sounds like some sound advice, however.....

All the niches I have any expertise / knowledge in have super high competition for the majority of keywords. Specifically my passion and skill lies in golf and football - along with any other sport really.

Is it possible for me to break into these niches? If so, how would I go about it initially? If not - which I would suspect the majority of people to respond with - what can I do about choosing a niche?

Any other info / advice / pointers would be more than welcome!!!

There are ways, as some people have posted about this in other posts in this forum, you have to break it done to a more specific part of the niche that may have less competition but still has decent global monthly search volume (over 2500 a month but less than 25000 google search results competition is what I use).

For example:

If the general niche is how to train your dog, you might break it down to

how a new owner trains a dog

or how a new owner trains a terrier

how a new owner poddy trains a terrier

how a new dog owner trains a soft coated Irish Wheaton Terrier to sit.

You drill down to a more specific keyword in the area until you find something that gets enough searches but has less competition.

There is a lot more advice on this so I suggest you search the forum for "niche" and "keyword research" or just "keyword" to find a lot more.

I say go for an exact match top level domain, as this goes a long way. Better yet, if you can manage to find a decent product to review, this can give you a backdoor to some of the biggest markets online.

there are still plenty of domains available for great keywords in the football niche...

whilst long tail keywords are good to go for, so are available, high volume keywords...

You can crack any niche, including the most highly competitive arenas by appealing directly to the interests of enthusiasts. For example, search for golf and football outlets such as ezines, websites, blogs, and offline publications. Either advertise in these or submit articles with a relevant call to action; delivering value directly to readers. Most of my marketing actually is within heavily competitive niches, and this method effectively bypasses all the entrenched SEO "wonder boys" and keyword "professionals".

I would go for any niche as long as I am interested in it.

Like the saying goes ...would rather be at the bottom of the ladder for something I like, rather than at the top of the ladder for something I don't like or want.

So, even if there are lot of competition, you can find a way to get traffic, just stick to a plan and do not give up.

I see no problem with going for a high competition niche if it's something you're passionate about. I enter high competition niche's all the time and make money. It all comes down to your approach and what you are trying to get out of the niche to begin with.

"myob" has it exactly right. You can crack into any niche if you're willing to step up and provide what the audience is looking for. Competition is a good thing, it tells you that it's a viable niche with lots of interest.

When you choose a niche that you're passionate about, you deeply understand what people are looking for. You know exactly what problems need to be solved, and you can take on the ones you're equipped to handle.

Look at it in a different way.... instead of going after a keyword with 10k searches a month start targeting longtail keywords w/750 to 1500 searches a month. Pick as many of these as it takes to total up to 10k searches a month. Alot of these longtail terms are more targeted and it will allow you to compete in the biggest markets out there. I would also suggest becoming active in some of the bigger forums in your chosen niche and link back to your site w/signature.

You don't have to create 'THE' authority site in the middle of a huge niche to make $- There is absolutely nothing wrong with cashing a whole lot of little checks from the outer edges.

yes definitely is is even easier to make money in my opinion. More people buying means more money.

I personally won't enter a market unless there are at least 150,000 searches a month and at least 15-20 info products on the topic. This basically proves there is a high demand and that people are buying information in that niche.

The more people in that niche selling information the better it is for me because they are all potential jv partners and affiliates.

Its possible, but like any good SEO campaign it can take a very long time to break into a niche with very high competition.

A better approach would be to try at the least generic and very specific niche with some long tailed keywords. And then as your reputation grows the niche should grow generic and the keywords should evolve in to short tailed keywords.

I think it possible to getting into any competitive niche. Before you go into it, you must make sure you have what it take to compete.

The answer is positive and if your website is powered by strong links, and at the same time has useful and original contents, even if you touch some of the tough markets and competitive online niches, after some time your site will begin to experience improvements in ranks and net traffic shares. Even top-ranking websites found at the top of Google today were a few years ago simple sites containing only a few pages of contents and maybe a few incoming links.

Nothing is going to happen very quickly and it will take some weeks and months of time, especially while working on SEO projects in too competitive niches, before tangible changes in ranks happen but they will, sooner or later. You might think of targeting secondary terms for the present time, avoiding too competitive niches and keywords which are already targeted by websites powered by thousands of links. You can gradually shift to the primary words then.

if you choose a niche, sure go for it but
dont go for KEYWORDs in that niche, that are brutally competitive

If you target that keyword, you will have zero chance of ranking top 10 on google

now when you target maybe Car Insurance California(just a made up example) you might have 100 times better chance for ranking top 10 since
that is a much more narrowly defined keyword that will have 100 times less competition (in theory)
