If you're writing in Wordpress, that'll show you the word count of your articles.

I wouldn't obsess over keyword density; that's so 1995. Just get the keyword into the title, ALT tag, H1 tag and at least once in the article near the top of the page.

Beyond that, only use the keyword however it comes naturally as you're writing your article.

I'm the publisher of Universe Today and co-founder of the Keyword Strategy tool.

I use what salesguru posted. It has been the best one for me so far.

Also,

Article Keyword Density Tool

A search brought up another option of "Article Analyzer" that seems to be a PLR product (so you can probably find it for free).

I write my articles in Microsoft Word, which tells me the word count. I then paste it into Live Keyword Analysis. It will tell you the keyword density for a word or phrase that you specify.

If you are a Wordpress user, I would recommend those two plugins.
- GhostBloggers™ Keyword Density Checker
- SEO-Tool - Keyword Density Checker

You don't really need one. Your main keyword should show up about once for every 100 words. If you're writing in WP or something like that, it keeps track of your word count. Once you have done enough writing, though, you kind of get a feel for it. For instance, I know that for me, 100 words equates to a paragraph.

In WORD you can also use the 'find' feature to search and highlight repeat phrases, you simply count 'em up and divide by the word count. You can also get the Flesch Kincaid reading level, character count and a whole lot of other article analysis stuff using WORD.

Once you have got the article sorted, copy and paste through notepad before copying to your site.

Wordpress has some pretty impressive built in plugins that do all the calculations for you. But you should focus more on having the keywords at the right places.
