What are some key factors for SEO in your opinion

Hello all, I would like to deepen my understanding of SEO and analyzing competition, I think this thread could be useful to many if some people contribute to it .

Let's discuss a few factors of SEO :

On-page-SEO
Off-page-SEO
Quality content

WARNING : This thread is not intended to make a debate whether quality content is better to rank than backlinks, just post your method, which you think is best but to keep things the clearest possible let's avoid the random debates. (or just make your own thread about it)

So for exemple I'm looking for a keyword that have low competition, well first of all, what do you call "low competition" ?

What factors you take account of when you say it's "low competition" ?

For instance let's say the top 1 for that particular keyword is a page rank 6 with like 10 backlinks to the page, would that be considered low competition if so, to what extent ? (say I have a on-page optimized website and 50 backlinks, would I be able to get to #1)

And also for someone like me who is from switzerland and would like to research competition for US (or mostly amazon.com products) is there a good way(free not market samurai.. you know what I mean..) to make sure the google rankings displayed are the same as a US resident ?

I understand SEO is a complicated process to learn so I don't expect too much from this thread but I wanted to see what other people think of that.

I'll also update this thread with different questions and possibly case study.
