Though this method is not new but still not well tap .All you do is to submit a software using PAD file to software download site .this is very effective and it a backlink from authority site .if you don't have a software visit http://conduit.com to create simple community toolbar and submit it with a PAD file generator which you can download @

then fill in your details ..with this you can submit your tool bar to various software directories .

Can this create a backlink to an inner page on your site or is it only for the main page?

Is there a step by step tutorial anywhere which explains how to do this?

The pad file has all the information of your products, such as company name, website, product version, etc.. it is really a good way to acquire fast link. However, most of the authority sites like download.com will review your product before publishing it. If you can make your own software and build a simple site with it, submit it to tons of download sites, you gain the much chance to win.

First, create a software product and build a site with it.
Second, find a software vendor who has its product PAD file(XML), download and rewrite it.

I tried this a while ago, I had some success, although I think we're getting to the point now where the difficulty is getting these software sites to accept PAD submissions, since their is just so many people doing it.

A lot of software sites I submitted to last time had in excess of 10-15 thousand submissions pending approval ... there was a few of them that even went above 100,000 pending... one of them I remember saying that estimated time for new submission approvals would be like 20 years (LOL)

Then there's the other sites that have decided to require reciprocal links in order to approve submissions.

Although this being said, there are a good amount of sites that still approve within a very short amount of time, so definitely worth doing I think.

This is another one of those things that people try because it sounds like it might work - but actually doesn't most of the time.
