We've seen great results with BMR, though if you don't continue to build links, you will see substantial drop off after you links rolls off the first page.

Whatever you do vary your anchor text. I can't emphasize that enough. Here are some good link building posts:

Try getting top quality links rather than a huge number of links. When you're near the top, 10 PR5 or 6 links can be worth 1000 PR1 and PR0.

I would get permanent, homepage links from higher PR sites (PR 4+) in addition to using partial match anchor text. Partial match is proving to be more powerful than exact match.

Here's a great video discussing partial match anchors:

Great, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

When it comes to getting high quality, high PR backlinks which actually work to improve your rankings I can only suggest one service which has worked well for me and that's Link Building Services | Link Building Service | SEO Services

It's a bit expensive, but if you're serious about building an authority and gaining traction in competitive niches then it's a good investment.

I hope that helps,
Craig

With software like Market Samurai you can track your competition, see how many links he adds every week, from how many domains. You really need to know what your competitor is doing to be able to catchup / take first place.

I keep my Guru SEO in the basement.

I would use various methods of building links and do it consistently. It is also very important to look at your cometition. If there are authority sites with high PR and lots of backlinks then it it may take time to improve your rankings. Just carry on building links and also add content to your site regularly and you should see an improvement in your rankings.

Hope that helps
