How important is the age of a domain? does it weigh alot if your 0 and someone is 8+ yrs but they're only PR3-4 with under 2k backlinks, would it be hard to beat them?

Age of any domain is the subject of its stability in the particular market and domains with higher age gets highly preference by search engines.

so all would it be possible to rank higher than them if i had a PR3-4 and more backlinks and had some .EDU .GOV links ?

I'm sure but if your competitors are getting links from PR 5 and above sites it would be impossible as you too have to get links from high PR sites only then you can compete.

Try to get backlinks from different resources like forums, blog commenting, guest posting, Press release and so on. I'm sure you can outrank your competitors.
