Default url wording

I have put together about 8 website over the past 3 years which isn't very many but in that time I have never heard anyone say it is important to put a - dash in between the words on multi word web page url's. for example
pets.com/dog-cats-birds rather then .com/dogcatbirds.

I have about 25 multi word pages and was wondering if it would make a big difference in my SEO work and search results if I changed it or if it really wouldn't make much difference. Is it easier for google to read the url and do they think putting in a - is the correct way. I was thinking if it did as long as my site isn't in the top 10 in the search results and if this would make it go backwords for a while then go farther forwards farther later it might be worth the work. Thanks Mark
