Default Adwords and Popups

I'm running a Google Adwords Campaign and am sending traffic to my sales letter.

I want to collect names with a pop-up NOT a squeeze page ( I want everyone to be able to read the letter). However, I know Google has banned pop-ups.

Is there a way around this?

I've heard you can use DHTML PopUps. Is that true?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Kenneth

Google frowns on DHTML popups.

You may get away with it for a while, but once your site gets a human review, they will catch you and probably slap your campaign.

There is a way around this - sort of. Google frown on popups that are triggered AUTOMATICALLY. However, if you have a popup that is triggered by the user - e.g. the popup only comes up when the user clicks on something - then that's ok because from Google's viewpoint, the user has given you permission by clicking on something.

Otherwise, I don't know of any other way you can use popups on your Google landing page.

you could use an exit pop-under, that's fine.

I wouldn't suggest using a popup of any sort on a webpage you are sending AdWords traffic too. I agree with Loz that an exit pop under ought to be okay.

Hey Guys,

I have been running times popups on an adwords landing page for ever, while I agree it should have been slapped by a reviewer, fact is, it hasnt.

It might just be that its on a 15 second delay, to get them after they have started to read, so maybe manual reviewers done hang around for 15 seconds???

I don't know, but it works for me.

Are you sure about this?

My understanding is that Google doesn't allow it.

Do not do any pop ups if you are running Adwords. Keep the opt in form above the fold, highly visible, and give a compelling reason for the visitor to opt in.
It is possible to get high percentage of opt ins without resorting to shady means.

I noticed that the SEO Elite site was doing it and I've seen other sites do it. I just wondered if it was allowed or if they got caught.

Also Loz, do you have any Pop Under Software that you recommend?

Many Thanks,
Kenneth

I must be missing something - I don't see any pop-under (on exit or otherwise) at seoelite.com

I also googled "seo elite", the landing page for the #1 ad is seoelite.com/index2.htm - I didn't see any pop-under (on exit or otherwise) there either.

I did however see a DHTML pop-over on both pages.

It's important to note that just because someone has campaigns running that has pop-unders, does not mean Google allows it. It could simply mean they haven't noticed it yet. E.g. Seo Elite uses DHTML pop-overs, yet others have had their ads disabled for using DHTML pop-overs. Just because they may be getting away with it at the moment, doesn't mean it's allowed.

pop-over/pop-under, same thing, it's just another word for it (marketing purposes - at least I think so, cos it's what I would do to get the attention out there turning to ya product).

Kenneth -

If a new browser window is opened
then that is explicitly against
Google's TOS. Popover, popunder
it doesn't matter.

I've heard a variety of opinions on
DHTML "popups" - since they don't
open a new window, technically
that's OK. I've used them - though
not often - and not had a problem.

Other people swear Google doesn't
like them and you'll get slapped by
a human reviewer.

I wouldn't run the risk on a domain
name you're really attached to -
once a URL gets slapped, it tends
to stay slapped regardless of what
you do.

given time Google will find you out. do you really want to put in all that time just to get slapped? I've seen other advertisers do the exact things I do and get away with it.....or do they?
