Default Is it a good idea to comment on blogs not related to your niche?

For example, I don't blog about internet marketing, but is it a good idea for me to come to participate in Warriorforum?

What do you guys think? To simply comment on many different blogs as possible?

Every backlink has some value. But still 1 relevant link is more valuable than 10 irrelevant.

Are you interested to get traffic directly from these comments, or do you use them for SEO? If the goal is direct trafic, I think it's best to comment on related blogs only.

But if you want to build backlinks, any backlink has some SEO value, even if a backlink from a non-related blog will likely have less SEO value. The way I see it, it's a matter of optimizing the use of your time.

I believe that every backlink is worth at least something. What could be wrong by posting comments in the blogs that aren't related to your website niche. You're still getting backlinks and traffic.

If you want to build relationship among bloggers community, it is best to comment on similar niche that you have. This way, chances of approving your comments are higher and other blogger will visit your blog as well.

Actually let me rephrase my question:

Is it okay to comment on blogs that aren't the exact same, focused niche?

E.g. my own blog appeals more guys from 20-30. Should I therefore comment on blogs that more general in personal development?

I think it’s a great idea! You see with blogging you never know who will be interested in your blog. The first step to success online is building new relationships. By engaging with other bloggers on their blog you’re starting the relationships process. When you get this relationship they will follow you on twitter, Facebook and start visiting your blog. So to answer your question, yes it's very important to also comment on blogs outside of your niche!

You'd get some variety. You certainly wouldn't have trouble and the worst thing that can happen is that they are ignored by google.

Your actually defeating the object attracting visitors to non-topic related blog comments . . . regardless of link advantages or improved ranking.

Much better to have fewer quality visitors who have a genuine interest in the article/blog than 'a few heavy showers but the crops still don't grow'. . . . . I like that expression, and just made it up myself by the way

Sometimes less is more.

A link is a link ...

However if you comment and interact within a community related to your niche you are going to receive more traffic from people interested in your link. As it is closer matched to the niche it will resonate with them and they will click out of interest or even curiosity.

That said, if I am within the cross stitching niche and was on an IM blog with a PR4 homepage, I am going to ensure I leave a very informative and relevant comment for the post. I will always build a link where I get the chance to do so, niche relevant or not... In 99% of cases they don't hurt!

Places I avoid are sites that are just a link farm, or have adult or other outgoing links that I do not agree with.

I don't get it. If it is a related niche and your readers will probably hang out on that blog, where is the problem? Don't 20-30 year olds read personal development blogs? Does that mean that those who are there will not be interested in what you have to offer?

If it is a totally different niche and not at all related, then I understand your quandary. And NO, a link is not a link, not if it is a link to a site that isn't related to yours.

What I would advice is that if you think your target readers might be frequent readers of the other blog and it is in a related niche, don't just comment for the sake of leaving a comment. Leave something that really adds value to the blog post and you will see the traffic come to your site. It has worked for me.

It's not a big deal, but to be honest I don't altogether agree with most of the responses above. (I do agree completely with Sharon, immediately above.)

Call me a skepchick but I think that pleas for "variety" sometimes conceal a compromise on quality (I'm talking about backlink quality, not comment/content quality).

There's no harm in commenting on blogs that aren't "up your street", but one has to ask oneself whether it's a valuable use of one's time.

For me, most of the time, it just isn't: it's time I could be using writing a new article, writing a new autoresponder email, working on a website, posting in the forum or painting my toenails, all of which are frankly more significant to me than non-context-relevant backlinks.

The idea that "a backlink is a backlink" (and its obvious implication that they're all more or less the same) is - to me - so diametrically opposed to all notions of common sense, practicality and sensible SEO that I'm not even going to go there.

The discrepancy in link-juice value, for my business, between backlinks from relevant sites and any others is so overwhelming that, although I agree there's no downside at all, I'm just not interested in non-context-relevant backlinks - not to the extent of looking for them and posting them, anyway. The idea that Google somehow prefers "a mixture of backlinks" is - to me - just an intellectually lazy, see-through attempt to justify spending your time/effort on poor quality/relevance backlinking. Others' mileage may vary, but in my business, that doesn't help to pay money in to the bank. (And to be honest, we can all see for ourselves, from analysing the SEO-quality of the top-ranked sites in many SERP's results, that it's nonsense).

The only real reason for commenting on off-topic blogs is that you have nothing better to do. In which case, fine - do it: there's no downside. But don't expect to benefit from it.

Well, go for it! A dofollow link will not harm you in any way, variety is good when it comes to link building. This is how you get to become an authority website.

I would stand in line with Alexa, a time effective approach to achieving a grater goal, with the exception of course to the painting of one's toe nails, as I find no value in such a mindless daunting task.

I did, however, find value in the time she spent in her post as myself, I am not allowing sufficient time to provide a quality post that will gather additional attention. I personally took the time to look at her signature file, simply because she took the time to post an engaging comment.

If you did the same it would give references to taking the same approach, and not simply think of your efforts as a backlink mission, but rather to gain an audiance.

Sufficiently, I do not put a lot of value in a self promoted back links having a lot of value, and based on how much time I spent to get one link. I am not sure it was worth it.

Thanks guys! I guess it was a big confusion for me solely because... from my research and experience, it's actually kind of hard to find a blog who talks and writes like me, of the same niche at that!

If it's traffic you are going for, I guess I would actually say no, that it'd be worth it to kind of stay close to your niche and your target audience. But at the same time it couldn't hurt...if you are there already you might as well comment!

Comment to your heart's content, but do not spam! If you have something of value to share than there nothing wrong in commenting outside your niche.

You will read opinions from both sides of this question. There is a difference between commenting for traffic and for links. Do links on related sites have more value? truth is, only google knows for sure. However, a link is a link.

As mentioned by others each backlink counts, relevant value will worth more than irrelevant backlink.
Just be careful that don't spam for backlinks, make it naturally and every comment will count.

As many users stated that a relevant link might have more value than any link and also you might get direct traffic if it is in a related subject.

In regards to ranking, I would comment on any blog if I had the chance..I actually did some testing 3 weeks ago on a domain that I have owned and I never ranked good in that niche , I noticed a guy who ranked good for some good high competitive keywords and his site was 3 months old.. I checked his links using Market Samurai and I went and tested the top ones and left comments..my site impressions went up from 120 to 2500 and I ranked at the 4th page for that keyword.. all the blogs were unrelated but have a value..so yes it does count

You can get backlinks but the traffic and rank of the site would not be increased.so i think you better get back links from the relevant sites.they would be helpful for the increase traffic and rank.

It always not good to engage in a conversion that is not related to your niche, and it is worst in blog commenting.

My main blog is on health and fitness and I am really interested in this topic so I subscribe to a lot of related blogs and read them regularly. If I have something to add to the posts on these blogs I leave a comment.

However, this is not my only interest. Since I run a blog and want it to get lots of traffic and make lots of money, I also subscribe to quite a few internet marketing blogs. Although this is not directly related to the topic of my main blog (health and fitness), it is still 1 of my main interests and through my experiences running a blog I can often provide valuable input by leaving a comment.

Personally, I think it's still a good idea to comment on non-related blogs so long as it is a genuine comment and not just a link building exercise. Here's why...

1) Visitors To The Blog May Still Be Interested In Your Topic:- I'm interested in fitness and internet marketing - 2 completely unrelated topics. It's very likely that some of the visitors to the internet marketing blogs I comment on will be interested in fitness and like my site.

2) It Is A Great Networking Opportunity:- If I make a comment on an internet marketing blog a fellow internet marketer who runs a related site or owns a related product may see it and click through. This could then potentially lead to a joint venture. Alternatively, someone might really like my writing and want me to write for them.

I agree with what others have said in that the link in itself is valuable, but if you comment in a similar niche then a really valuable and interesting comment can potentially grab interest of readers of the comment. So for bringing in a curious person to see what your site is about "related niche" is probably better, but the backlink is the backlink as far as the link back goes.
