Link Pyramids Question

I've never used link pyramids, but after a lot of research I'm going to attempt to set one up for a fairly competitive keyword to see how well these work. I just wanted a bit of advice from those with knowledge before I start:

Assuming my keyword has 90,000 searches a month (exact match) and the competition is mid level.

1) How many tier one (Web 2.0 sites) would be recommended?
2) When do I link to my money page? Do I build up the pyramid before linking?
3) Would it be best to build the pyramid manually before attempting to use automated software?

Any other advice you feel relevant feel free.
