In my experience, the newer a site is the lower their relevance for a backlink!

There are lot of ways to build back links:

Forum Posting (You can use the signatures)
social Bookmarking
Article posting
Press Release
Web 2.0 properties
Link wheel
Profile signatures

But you have to use different SEO strategy to get valuable back links

okay. You will have greater number of backlinks if you have an older site.

If site is newer, then backlink is not profitable. Because we don't know site is indexed or not.

In my opinion the best way to get back links is a manual process Social bookmarking, article submission, forum postings, blog posting.

One of the best ways to get backlinks is to attract them. Yes, you ca attract backlinks to your site. Make some interesting stuffs and you will surely have a good number of backlinks with good quality.
