Default Is backlinking for SEO dead?

Hi guys. Im brand new to the forum but this looks like the place to get answers so hopefully you can help me.

I have been trying to submit articles to directories in order to gain backlinks and boost my google rank. I read that this was the way to do it however after doing some research it seems that this seems to be an old method that isn't being used any longer.

Just wanted to ask if getting backlinks will still increase your page rank on google and if so, what is the best way to go about getting backlinks now?

If creating backlinks no longer increases your page rank with google, how do you guys go about boosting page rank these days?

Many thanks

Backlinks are still the key element for pagerank and SERP but yes, you need to careful about the quality of links. Social bookmarking, forums and blog commenting are the top methods to get good backlinks

Yes, backlinking is dead, so stop wasting your time. In order to get higher rankings in Google we now have to pay them $10 per single movement in the SERP's for uncompetitive terms that have fewer than 2,000 exact match searches a month...

There is a sticky thread in this sub-forum with almost 100 ways to get backlinks. Check that out first. Submitting article to general directories is still OK, but it only be a small part of your link building strategy. If you can afford it, there is a service called "Build My Rank" which has worked pretty good for us, and everyone else I've seen discussing it seems positive.

I'd take this piece of advice with a grain of salt - they are the lowest quality links you can get.

The truth is virtual online world depends upon linking one source to an other. This way backlinks can never be dead. There are different article directoreis to get maximum backlinking that I have been trying and have been successful for proper output. Such as ezine articles, articlebase, sooperarticles and article dashboard etc. However, squidoo and hubpages are also of a great help if you believe my word.

And what exactly qualifies as a quality link over a poor link?

I am not agree with MaverickUK, back links are still working a lot if you have any problem than you should go for quality not for quantity . I am doing seo for three websites and that all still rank good in google serp. Thanks

A quality link is defined by several characteristics:

1) The quality and theme of the page being linked from. Is it on topic? Does it have high PR. If you website is a "Red Widget" web page, the highest quality link your could get would come from an authoritative Red Widget page.

2) In content. These are much better than links buried in footers, the sidebar etc. It means they were 'editorially given' so they count more. An in content link from an authority page would be high quality.

Backlinking is not dead. The amount of good-quality backlinks to your website still helps Google adjust how credible and authoritative your website is. It is still a big part of SEO.

The Panda update didn't kill backlinking, it just added a factor into how Google ranks websites. It curved the SE for user experience. If someone clicks on to your site and immediately clicks back off of your site, Google will see that. IF Google sees that you have a high bounce rate then your site will be considered trash or spam and you will be forced down the SERPs.

You'll hear this a million times: Get high PR backlinks on relevant sites.

Free guide. NO OPT-IN. Don't learn SEO, just outsource it with money that is basically GIVEN to you.
This guide shows you how to use your smart phone to make a couple hundred dollars a month and how to funnel that money into your new SEO empire.

Patience.

Why is it that everyone is so anxious when it comes to SEO?

This isn't Adwords, Search Engine Optimization takes time.

Think about it this way. If Google did rank websites that quickly, what kinda search results would exist? Even crappier!

Google needs time to find backlinks, index the links, and then "trust" these links. If it was as simple as throwing a bunch of links at Google, then you can bet your butt SEO would be an entirely different game of cat and mouse.

Yes backlinks work, its one of the largest variables in Google's algorithm. But you must give it time.

Backlinking is still important. It's the other half of on-page optimization. You need both to rank well in Google. Don't forget to build links from social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. These sites are authority sites that are used by Google as good signals for your website(s).

Backlinking is always going to be the number one ranking factor in SEO.

The rise of social interaction online is growing too so this will be more and more evident and ranking factors.

As most of you have said, Backlinks still works. It's like the backbone of SEO. There are so many ways of creating backlinks. You just need to stick with quality sources of your backlinks. When I say quality sources that means NO SPAMMING, take consideration on the PR and nodofollow links, and related to niche. Article submission still works but it takes time to see the good results..

Yes I think if Google went in this direction I would be happy to give up SEO if they had an affiliate program that kicked 30% my way across the board. Sites not presently indexed would have to be assessed position 1,000.
