Before keyword research my question would be
why are you choosing a website based on football news
and scores?

Where are you looking to make revenue?

Have you ever tried Google Keyword Tool? It is an option in AdWords Accounts. You can type in your main keyword and then it will spit back up to 800 related keywords along with search volume, competitiveness, etc.

For a more streamlined view you should check out Market Samurai (I think they still have a free trial). This will allow you to dive even deeper into exactly how competitive some keywords are so you know which ones you should concentrate on.

Most importantly, once you've found the keywords you want to focus on is to make sure your content is SEO optimized for that keyword. I use a free alternative to SEOPressor called BloggerHigh. You need to join a mailing list to get it but it is well worth it. With BloggerHigh each post will have a dynamic checklist with things like: Keyword in H1, Keyword in H2, Keyword in H3, Keyword Density, etc. Then it will give you an overall score out of 100 (I usually get 94ish) for how well your content is optimized. It is a great guide to ensure you are structuring your posts optimally.

That's all I can think of right now, but I am sure other Warriors will chime in as well.

You need to find low competition keywords... Allintitle, allinurl etc.. etc.. Need higher of exact local search.. Much easy to rank..

Yes, agreed. Start with the Google Keyword Tool to do your keyword research for the football niche. I've attached an example attachment of doing basic research using this tool.

There are a couple of things you'll want to make sure you do when you start your research in this tool:

- Make sure you select [Exact] for the Match Type (as shown in the attached image)

- Make sure you understand the competition column - this is not a reflection of how competitive that keyword is, but rather, how many advertisers are actually bidding on that keyword. Keywords showing high competition in this column can sometimes be a good thing as it can mean more pay for you for those particular ads.

- Find keywords that have at least 1000 global monthly searches.

- Do your research on the actual competition for the keywords you select. This means looking at your top ten or so competitors and checking on the number of backlinks for each link listed on the first page.

Only then can you decipher which keywords would be best to target.

The website contains all kinds of football information ranging form news, scores, forums, links to live games, football footage etc - i have google adverts and also betfair as an affilaite. I would like the to make revenue from adverts, betfair and also once the site generates decent traffic to run fantasy football and eventually sell sports products on the site.

yeah.... Google Keyword Tool.... really a fantastic tool... it provides you all related keywords.... you will find them from there..... But in my opinion you have to first start with some long tail keywords..... if you want to be in Top searches for a long time... then start with long tail keywords that contains your main keyword... simply m telling it to you.. because i done it for the keyword ""WEB HOSTING"".... as you know its very much competitive... but i use strategy of using long tail keywords... it takes 6 months time to appear in top searches for "web hosting" keyword... but now i am stable here for a long time... so go for it....

To echo what other people have already said on the thread, you need to find keywords in the sweet spot: relatively high traffic (I look for > 1000 global monthly phrase match results) and relatively low competition.

The best way, in my opinion, to gauge competition is to look at how well the sites on page one for that keyword are optimized, both on-page and off.

On-page optimization is the things you do on your page to indicate to Google what your page is about:

Quote:
In your page title.
In your page description
In your page URL
In the headings and subheadings
In the first sentence and your first paragraph
In the last paragraph.
In your text links.
In the ALT tags on images.
Off-page optimization is basically backlinks to your page from other pages.

Market Samurai is a great tool for this but I think you have to get the paid version (currently $149) to unlock the SEO Competition module where you can look at how well the sites on page one are optimized.

The free version of Traffic Travis has that information in a slightly different format.

The other main tool I use is Alex Safie's Stealth Keyword Competition Analyzer (SKCA), which you can get here on the WF.
Hope this helps.

My Friend use the Google Keyword Tool, and just do a search on Football, make sure it's set to Exact Match. Find phrases with 1,000 + Exact terms, and target them.

Hey MyFootball - I would also recommend Market Samurai. It may cost money but it will save a lot of time and take away a lot of the manual work associated with keyword research.

Also have to agree with Nathan. I'm a football fan and when I want footy scores I automatically go to bbc.co.uk/football. I think this niche would be far too competitive.

As you might have seen that google show the results with the highlighted keyword. So you should know that keyword is the word that enter by people for their query and as per which results be shown with the quality content. So observe such words in your field that people use more for their search and you will get the best result. As this method will take sometime for showing the results but it will definitely show the best results.
