If my primary keyword is dog grooming denver co, would it be better to focus on optimizing google places instead of organic seo since places is listed first?

Ideally, you should do both. Having a Google Places page does not guarantee that you will be listed in the local results for any of your given keywords so doing SEO alongside having a Google Places page gives you two methods for regional ranking.

It is always better to have a backup with organic local SEO. Plus, Google places often cause surprises, they can switch off the listing, sometimes ***t happens. Not only as SEO expert, but also as an entrepreneur, who wants to have a backup - I recommend organic SEO for plan B |
