Default Is it hard to rank if...

Is it hard to rank top if my domain name is not a keyword-related domain and was bought a while ago (few months maybe?) without search engine optimized at all before?

I would say this depends on the competition right?

But, when i search the keywords, the top websites on google aren't often the exact keyword domains...

So, how much work is it needed to climb up to the top without a exact keyword domain?

There are a lot of variables involved in ranking. Market Samurai is the best keyword tool to do detailed research and find every piece of data on the front page competition and the amount of people targeting the keyword in exact and phrase. You don't need to have a keyword domain but it will help you rank easier if the front page competition is not filled with authority sites.

Google is putting less and less emphasis on a keyword rich domain names. As long as you have all the other on and off page SEO taken care of. And make sure that your posts or pages are keyword rich.

i.e. not-a-relevant-domain.com/keyword-rich-post-name/

However, if the domain is only a couple of months old, you're not benefitting from the age of the domain, so why not buy a KW-rich domain? If it helps a bit and it comforts your visitors to see the KW they were searching for in your domain, it's worth the couple bucks. Plus it often helps to get more clicks when people are searching through the search results and see a KW related domain name.

I have had success working with clients getting not only keywords ranked with no kw in the domain, but also ranked with no on page seo. Granted these were very low competition, but it can occur.
