Hello I have a slight challenge in figuring how to package both the design of the SEO services for a client. How should this sold to the client should it be an upsale, one time fee, monthly fee for SEO, seperate cost for both website and SEO, etc. What has worked for you?

I charge a monthly fee depending on the niche will depend on how much :-) I start at £250 a month and have a min term of 12 months normally It really is money for old rope.... But you need to ensure you can actually get results and not just tell the client you can Danny |

An effective method is building the website and then renting it to your client and including SEO with it. It you go this route, you would have to rank on the first page of Google so that you have some proof that you know what you're doing. You can charge anywhere from $500-$2000 / month for this type of cyber landlording. Depending on the niche, a couple of well-written and well distributed press releases every other month may be all it takes to get you on the first page of Google. Or you can use some of the monthly income and outsource the SEO. This way if your client drops off / cant afford to pay / goes out of business etc, then you simply rent it out to one of his competitors. From there, you can offer additional services such as Google Places (plus reviews), adding an autoresponder service etc. |

I learned after a year of being in business for myself (starting in 1995) to require 100% prepayment up-front and to assure any client that they have full ownership of their website. The website, to me, is like building a car. Only after you have the car built can you suggest a map to where your client might want to drive. So SEO tweaking and monitoring is is part of that Phase II map and is an optional add-on. Whether the client learns from me how to do that Phase II or pays my team to just do it for them is definitely a different project beyond the initial website setup and has a one-time setup fee + monthly fee after that. |

I have been bitten twice this year by people not paying but its all been sorted and renting out the domain name is a great way to go... Also you own it outright :-) Danny |
