Why are you focused on PR?

Focus on rankings, because PR isn't what pays the bills....it's rankings...
Unless of course you plan on only selling links.

You are right! I forgot to say this to the TS.. there's a lot of websites having low PR that were ranking on top on Google. Think about it.

buliding backlink for a start, then update your homepage with quality contents like news articles frequently, If Google thinks your website is good without html code mistakes, it will go up in a few months

Build and build more links. PR is not instantaneous. It will require time and effort. Most get PR5 in a span of 2 years or so.

For getting many backlinks there are many methods but try to get the more quality backlinks instead of quantity of the links.
And as high pagerank matters for many factors as the less bounce rate & high conversion rate , quality backlinks & traffic , also the quality content. So one need to manage all these things to get the high pagerank. Get high PR links with low OBL. I don't really know why you value PR so much, it doesn't do anything only if you trying to sell links on your homepage.

Do some commenting on high PR pages (blog posts). Just 20 comments should be enough to get PR2/3 or so. Then focus on acquiring rankings and traffic.

yes, you are right that link building most important for SERP and also for Page Rank. but as we all know to improve page rank all links should be from high page rank website.

I have a site I only created 6 months ago and although I have no PR yet I am getting about 2500 visits per day. I have about 5 pages all in first place in Google or at least in the top 10. I worried about PR but I will wait until it comes.....

Try web 2.0 sites like Squidoo and Hubpages. Bookmark new pages and posts to Delicious, Digg and StumbleUpon and submit articles to ezinearticles.
