Default Average Time On Site Issues

I have a website that I have run for a few years that is a decent earner.

All the pages of the site had visitors on them for over 3 minutes on average which makes me feel they at least halfway enjoyed the content on the pages and got what they were looking for.

Recently, this site took a major hit in the search engines losing about 60% of it's overall traffic.

Now I noticed the time on the site average for the last 30 days was about 22 seconds instead of the typical 3 minutes it's averaged for 2 years now.

The site is not hacked or being redirected as I looked into this with the host and with the theme of the site. No major changes have been made that would increase loading times. In fact, there aren't any annoying advertisements at all since every link that makes me money is a simple text link with in the content on a few of it's pages.

What would cause such a drop in the average time someone says on the site when there has been 2 years of consistent longer views on the site?
