Default Does Google ban websites from specific keywords?

I have a website for my business and it ranks #1 for some of my keywords on Google but for my main key word "Carpet cleaning Tampa" I'am no where to be found. My website has better onsite SEO,backlinks and is overall better than my competition but Iam not in the top 500.
Now for bing and Yahoo Iam #1 for this keyword.
What really makes me wonder if my site is banned for this specific keyword is that my google places page is more optimized than any of my competition and it is no where to be found and it is linked to my website.

Does google ban websites for specific keywords?

No it doesn't, although for adsense it will. They won't do ads on porn or domains with bad words.

over anchor text abuse can trigger filters for that specific keyword and or the links are so spammy, and I imagine they are, then they perhaps got devalued.

Banned? No. Knocked way down in the results for specific keywords? Absolutely. Linkbuildr above probably has the most likely explanation - over-optimization for the specific keyword.

Google certainly does penalise websites on specific keywords. For years, johnchow.com was penalised for the keyword ‘John Chow’ (the penalty has been lifted now) and we see many websites that come to us wanting content that have been penalised for building too many links using the same anchor text.

So yeah, Google can pick out specific keywords and punish a website just for that phrase.

You very likely have a penalty on your hands. If you over optimize a site for a keyword or if you do aggressive backlinking with little to no variation on your anchor text then google will penalize you by dropping your rankings temporarily. This can last anywhere from a few weeks to months.

The best thing you can do at this point is slow down the link building and try to get other traffic methods besides from google.

When you talk about penalization, does Google use an automatic filter or manual review or a combination of both?

Your main KW could be more competitive than rest of the keywords your site appears on position 1. To overcome this, you can try building more anchor links using the main keyword.

Mostly it's automated, but Google does use human editors to check SERPs for quality as well. They have a checklist of things to look out for, and a list of search results to check.

Just a quick glance at your site
The term you are referring to is not listed more than about 4 times,
BUT
if you count the kws on your site, that kw density is WAY too high, for that term

If it was me? I would remove at least one if not two of the "carpet cleaning tampa" references on your site
you are overdoing it. I would not be surprised if your kw density is as high as 10 percent for that term which is WAY too high.
THAT is why you are being penalized. Try to keep the kw density to about 2 percent
You need to learn onpage SEO. If you REALLY want to rank well for that term, I would make a separate page for your site with the kw in the URL, such as
www.carpetdoctorinc.com/carpet-cleaning-tampa.html

with the Kw in the H1 tag, header, description and its already in the URL above that I posted
Then make a silo structure perhaps, if you wanted to get that technical, but if you backlink the above url, with that kw in the anchor text, I think you would do MUCH better than the way you are doing it, you have WAY high kw density, thats why they are penalizing you

and yes I used to own a carpet cleaning business

Your approx. #70 in Google SERPs for the keyword "carpet cleaning tampa".

Set the search count to 100 results per page then do a page search for your domain (carpetdoctorinc.com).

[Chrome Incognito]

BTW, that's not a penalty.
