Default Local SEO rankings Question

Hey guys,

Was just wondering what the priority was for dominating the local SEO market. I have a couple sites, one of which is a MMO Gaming eCommerce site which can rank for some fairly awesome keywords but only with local traffic.

Good news is that there IS good local traffic potential

So what is the best external SEO strategy?

1) Blogs/forums/site backlinks from Local IP addresses?
2) Blogs/forums/site backlinks from local domains (suffix for my country)

Are these very important for local rankings?

Thanks

Google Places listing with reviews/citations combined with well SEO'd website with a few high PR links.

The links don't have to come from local IPs.

Yea, the big one is citations. This is Google's way of seeing how popular your business is in your area, and they seem to give preference to companies with lots of citations. Work on getting those before you do anything else.

You might want to try adwords as well as far as getting local traffic.

Also - using FB and Twitter to get local people would help as well.

Yes, for local rankings these are important aspects. submitting website in local directories, listing business and getting links from other local business help the website to appear in top rankings in local search results.

You are not allowed to have a Google Places listing for an online-based business. From the Google Places Quality Guidelines:

"Do not create listings at locations where the business does not physically exist. P.O. Boxes are not considered accurate physical locations. Listings submitted with P.O. Box addresses will be removed."

"Only businesses that make in-person contact with customers qualify for a Google Places listing."

Anyway, if you build links for local SEO, the only difference from the normal organic link building is that:

- you will have to look for location marker in the anchor text
- it is good to have links from relevant websites (as always) and the relevant ones would be local ones, so that would give you additional "points"

Hope that helps

You MUST have a real local address. Google, Yahoo and even Bing will send you a postcard to verify the address.
This is the only way to go local and make any success at it.

Gaining local ranking is a bit difficult task though you can try building more backlinks by including your city name in the anchor text. e.g anchor link something like "city services".

Seems to me that if a post card came to a Business that they could reply out of curiosity and you are promoting all the business of that type in the area surly one of them will take a whim and if anything else they will contact you and you can pitch the Idea of focusing the page to them....

Fend is the mind killer....

city/town + keyword works really well for local search. If the comp isn't too stiff, just having the city/town listed at the footer is all you'll need to rank, as long as your onsite is solid.
