Hi opportunist86,

"Long tail" is a statistical term that refers to the distribution pattern of a key metric as represented in a Power Law graph. Long tail "keyword" refers to a keyword with low search volume or low website traffic, as compared to other keywords within the same set of statistics.

When you look at a power law graph based on keyword traffic, you often see a long tail. The keywords that make up the "long tail" of that graph are considered "long tail keywords".

Longtail keyword mean when you're searching for keywords that 2 to 4 keywords in it's decription. Example: lets say you use google keyword tool in you want to create a site around the search term cars. Google search tool will bring back a lot of results in the with the word car. like

car for sale
cars for sells
car parts texas
cars part texas company

see the words that have two or more letters will be long tail keywords. If you like more information on keyword and keyword research just go to you tube and search for keyword training tutorials or videos. Hope this helps. Take care God bless Your SUCCESS :-)

Hi olliepa,

Sorry, but that is just wrong.

The term has absolutely nothing to do with how many "letters", nor how many words. It refers to traffic distribution patterns. A long tail keyword could be any length.

Hi feliciayapsl,

Again, wrong.

The term does not refer to how general a keyword is.

@dburk - I agree with you.
The definition is about traffic, not how much words KW has.

But in real world people see phrases with multiple words that generates low traffic and low competition and combine it into a new definition

Someone in between we could say:
long tail keyword is a keyword that no one is paying attention till you make a research and find it

If the Main Keyword has 20,000 searches per month, a long tail key word searches will be around 2,000 which means it has less competition.

LOL, "fat head" keywords. I believe the correct term is the "short head". But hey, it's Rand, he is prone to saying all sorts of silly things.

You might want to read Chris Anderson's article on Wired Magazine which started the entire "Long Tail" discussion:

Selection of right keyword is first step in On page optimization, select right keyword that is relevant to content and use it in content.

It’s often good to target some long tail keywords as they are comparatively easier to rank for. But you can also come up with your own long tail keywords; for example try adding some common words like ‘best’, ‘free’, ‘cheap’, ‘top’ etc. along with your actual keyword and you might eventually get some good long tail keywords.
