Default Ranking keyword rich sub domains?

Has anybody tested ranking with sub domains? For example, trying to rank keyword.maindomain.com for "keyword".

I have read many contrasting stories on the web, with some claiming to have had great success ranking their sub-domains without massive extra effort.

Are their any warriors who can share any experience on the subject?

About.com does it all the time.

I think the words "without massive effort" would have
to be defined.
