If put my blog on subdomain what impact will it have on targeted keyword of main site?

I have a website with lots of articles for my keyword. I want to make announcements and post related stuff in a blog. I think putting it on a subdomain would help keep the two things separate. Are there any facts that back up that idea?

EDIT: Also, what effect would linking back to my main site from my subdomain have? Is it possible to over do it?
