Default G keyword tool - broad option as important?

I play around with this tool now for some time. I always used exact search.
Everyone says that exact search volume is the most important.
I do think it but only when you target this one keyword. like with a emd domain.

Now I think more and more that broad search count is more important as broad includes all possible combinations.
You may look for one keyword and how you rank for it. But reality is that you can rank for a ton of related searches
I understand that the broad search option in the keyword tool shows all the possible searches you could rank for.

The conclussion is maybe that a keyword that has a low broad-exact searches ratio is better suited for focused articles and exact match domains. A keyword that has a high broad searches to exact matches ratio has the potential to rank for more combinations and a authority kind of website setup maybe more beneficial.

whats warriors thought on this?

I've used the broad match only with one site which I plan on making a large authority site. I don't look at the numbers though, just look at the keywords for article ideas.

Each method requires a totally different approach to keyword research.

Personally I only use Exact match as it gives me the searchers for that exact term. I then base all my results off that.

However if you are using Broad then you should probably stick with broad as this is the data you are used to.

My advice it to just stick with whatever method you have been using and refine that. Keep switching and your data will be all over the place.

broad is great for getting related kws you had not thought of
google knows them, you might not

then when you find a related kw that way, go enter it with EXACT to find how many exact searches its getting (local preferably)

there is a great use for broad, and that is why

but make sure you dont select broad to get the number of searches, that will be wildly inaccurate, exact must be selected for that number

WRONG!

Sorry to be blunt but broad is exactly what it says and broad is very broad, the keyword tool is not made by Google for SEO research, it is made for PPC research, in terms of potential long tail you could rank for Phrase is probably closer.

Hope this helps, but I would stick with Exact for keyword research its the most reliable of the 3 in terms of what you can really expect
