Default How to Rank for a Keyword the "proper way"?

By following Google's webmaster policies and not trying to manipulate SERP, how does someone rank for a specific keyword?

If you backlink to a blog network or article directory and obviously place you anchor text in the article, this will pass pagerank. Apparently, this would be against Google policy, or am I wrong?

So if you completely play by Google's rules, how would you rank a page for a specific keyword? I get that you would do on page SEO, but that doesn't seem to be enough. Ok, so let's say you advertise on other people's sites. Well, they are suppose to put a "no follow" attribute on the link. So...you are not getting PR from that?

Any advice?

Here's how Google wants it to work...

You write something that people will naturally want to link to.

So lets say you write something really good. Then you go to a few social bookmarking sites and announce the masterpiece. Maybe you issue a press release.

Then others will see it, recognize its awesomeness and naturally link to it from their sites.

Thanks...

Also, forgot to add this.

There's nothing wrong with submitting your article to directories. Even if the link does nothing for your SEO, there's a possibility your article will be syndicated on other sites, which will give you targeted traffic and additional links.

So if that is true, then why do I see all of this services here on the hire section of people advertising high PR backlinks and all they need is your url and keyword/s. They don't even asked you for an article.

I don't get it. Are they doing something illegal, blackhat methods. Trying to learn this also.

If you done all the SEO and it doesn't work, why not try to spy your competitors. Use SEO Quake, SEO Spyglass, and/or Open Site Explorer for spying. Find the links that are giving them that position and try either getting links on the same pages or obtaining very similar links.

Panda slapped those websites spammed on article directory websites, but it doesn't discriminate websites submit quality articles to those directories. So it's ok to use article directories to generate backlinks, but remember, don't spam.

Writing quality content is important - no doubt about that. On-page SEO is also important - but it accounts only for maybe 10% of your ranking.

From my experience, you will need to build some backlinks in order to rank (even for low competition keywords)

Just go easy at the beginning and build links from different sources:

Blog comments
Forum profiles
Article submission
Video submission
Maybe a press relesae
Guest posts with editorial backlinks on high quality sites are some of the best tyes of backlinks

I agree with the methods mentioned here, just wanted to add that contextual backlinks are also good weight and important backlinks when creating your link profile.
