I have a website that is 1 year old. It ranks for certain competitive keywords(page 1, 2, and 6)..and then disappears completely for a week or two. It then reappears for a few days and then disappears again. I had a lot of pages that I deleted, webmasters tools found 404 so I had to redirect them all but it's fixed now. Can that be the issue? The website only has 7 pages currently. Building more as time goes on. Have not been super aggressive with link building...I'm trying to do everything right but it keeps disappearing which is worrying because I don't know if I should spend time and money on fixing the site.. I've seen questions about this topic on many forums but no one seems to have a straight answer for it.. FORGOT TO MENTION: It's been doing this for about 4 months now. |

This typically happens with new websites ones that are less than a year old and even worse to small sites, such as your that only has seven pages, since you have fixed the 404 errors, I would definitely create more pages two your site, if you have a blog located on the site I would write a couple of blogs a week; the dance back and forth could be cause be not releasing new content, more pages on your site, is new content, and gives reason for the bots to come back and crawl your site, and if it a regular basis the bots keep coming back. I think once you start adding pages you will see your site settle out with keyword rankings over time, and the added benefit you will see your site rank for keywords you may never have thought off before.

Yea I mean that makes sense. I have a blog so I'm just going to keep updating the site and building on it. It's a very competitive keyword in the financial industry so that can be causing all the weird stuff going on. Has anyone ever seen this happen to them and had their site recover and stabilize? |

If your site is ranking early and currently not ranks may be due to many reasons. 1. Google dance 2. Duplicate content 3. Site not quality 4. No quality backlinks 5. user friendly |

It is some thing like a Google dance. Google is now a days continuously update its algos but I think is that you are building links with high speed and is not following the white hat techniques purely.

There are only two scenarios here. It's either your website is sandboxed or penalized by Google due to some unethical SEO practice or it could just be a mere Google Dance. Just wait 1-2 weeks. Your site should be back on track.

most of the times this may happen due to the changing Google algorithms. However irrespective of that it is essential to post regular content for the respective keywords. There must be contineour backlinkc or backlinks at regular intervals for your keywords. This is estremely essential for keeping the rankings intact. Dont stop working on the keywords after securing good rankings, otherwise the rank would fall down again.

UPDATE: I built more quality content so it's up to about 18-20 pages. Google has been indexing these pages a few hours after a I write them. I also build some solid backlinks and today the site is ranking again for the keywords. I'll keep you guys updated on what happens from here. Thanks for all the help! |

Sounds like a typical dance.. This happened to me when I was working on brand new websites. Be consistent with your linking and have a variety of different backlinks..

It happens to me before. Indexing several backlinks in just a short period of time will make your site disappear on it search term. |

This still happens to a few of my sites. With new sites its known as the Google dance which is very common. As I said though, I still get it with sites that are over a year old. No one will every know for sure other than Google why this happens, but I guess we just have to get on with it.
