Default Ever outranked Wikipedia before?

For my new niche, there are about 30 kws I want to rank for

This is a commodity, but a very expensive one (think high grade Rice, coffee, soybeans etc)

Exported and very profitable

Wikipedia page for the main term for this nich is
en.wikipedia.org/blablah/main-term.html

I have no problem conceding them first place on the main term since that page is SEO'd for the term also.

problem is they rank #1 for every other term within that nich WITH THAT EXACT SAME PAGE

I am sure the terms are mentioned somewhere on the page , but
it is certainly not optimized for those other terms

Second problem is number of backlinks to that page? is way high

17000

You think there is any chance of outranking that page on some of the lower terms? I am certain some of the lower terms are not even contained in the anchor text at all (well pretty sure)

I even looked up, quickly a new term I found
its a complete misunderstanding of the kw, ..........................but
guess who ranks number one for that kw? you guessed it, that same wikipedia page

why? Because two of the words in the THREE WORD PHRASE
are discussed on that wikipedia page

Example
Ford Mustang discussed On wikipedia

I search for .........Fraudulent Ford Mustangs
nowhere on that wikipedia page is That phrase mentioned but
since ford mustangs is
Google pulls up that wiki page..................................

So I guess it may be saying, we cant find that phrase but this is the strongest page we can find RELATED to that phrase

so IMO in cases like that MAYBE that wiki page can be outranked? with a onpage SEO perfect optimized page?

Are you targeting informational seekers or buyers? Because if it is buyers they are going to ignore that Wikipedia page anyway.

How similar are the backlink profiles and optimization of sites in positions 2-5? Are they targeting the exact phrases you have in mind?

Probably the wikipedia links are there because the other websites are not really optimized for the search terms.

Hijack the wiki images with new/better public domain images. On the wiki image page include your anchor-text keyword backlinks, don't worry about the nofollow. On your page include the same image, with the same keyword anchor-text keyword pointing at the internal page your trying to rank.

At the very least it should get you 2nd in the SERPs, depending on how tough the other competition is.

They are very outrankable, as others have mentioned, primarily because they are not optimized for the keyword.

If Wikipedia is in the top 10 it usually means the keyword is easy to rank for. Wikipedia pages are a piece of fake to outrank. Generally speaking.

Even if the wiki page is ............wiki/.my-kw.html?

In other words 90 percent of my kws are no problem but one of them is
9000 searches per month and wikipedia has a page specifically dedicated to THAT kw

Yes, even if the wiki page is exactly in the URL it is still rather easy to rank.

You will notice that although the keyword is exactly written in the URL, the rest of the page is often very poorly optimized for the keyword.

Wikipedia is an authority site, they rank for millions of long term keywords. Concentrating on beating them for one of these keywords is a pretty standard procedure.

As someone else said, if Wikipedia is ranking on page one it is a general guide that the keyword is easy to rank for.

Yea I have several pages that outrank Wikipedia. They actually used to be in the top 5 when I started and my site was on page 5. It took a year but my site is #1 and they are #3

Wikipedia ranks due to its sites authority. So lets say it started a page about .../hotairballoons. It'll rank high right off the bat but only due to site bound links and domain authority. Once there is decent competition the lack of 3rd party linking hurts wikipedia. Not that people don't link to it but every page doesn't get linked to as much as you might think. IMO site bound authority really only gets you good ranks on very easy to rank for keywords. Sites with strong offsite links will win out in the end.

It's a good sign if Wikipedia is ranked high in my experience. They're easy to outrank as is the rest of the competition.
