hi
the first mistake that most of the SEO persons do, is not analyzing the competition and the backup plan, some time your one strategy not work then on should also have the backup plan to execute .

I've been told off for submitting an adsense website with good content via a search engine submitter. We should let the search engines find our website, especially with the 3-5 quality articles. What do you think guys?

I would say the biggest mistake in 2011 and going forward is over-optimization, that is over the top on-site tweaks and concentrated anchor text in your incoming backlinks doesn't, for example your keyword in the URL, title, meta tag, all over your page and 90% of your links for that keyword, it looks very manipulated, and hence de-optimization is a word in my vocabulary now, trying to make the site and link profile look as natural as possible, ever since I adopted this approach dancing in the serps has been a thing of the past for me...

I have seen many people committing this mistake of not analyzing their competitors before going on with optimization process and some even result in over optimization of their websites.

Sometimes you get to know your competitor strategies that can work wonders for your site. Spying was a time consuming task until I took the help of Keyword country.
It is like my magic wand which I keep to spy on my competitor strategies.
Also I would advice to keep a backplan ready in case your competitors outrank you...
