Are Amazon & The Like Easy to Beat For #1

Got a good keyword for a particular author. Amazon and barnes and nobel are top 5. A fair bit of all intitle and allinurl (about 20k each). Would this be a headache for a newbie? I remember reading on here a veteran saying retail companies etc were not much competition?

Amazon? No, it's not easy. They are in tons of my niches and even when you overtake them, it might not be for long.

It can be easy or difficult it all depends on how much time you put into beating them and how much time you put in staying there. How much knowledge do you have in seo?

Amazon has to play by the same rules you do. They just likely have a bit more authority.

I have outranked Amazon before. Having said that - there are easier lower competition keywords out there.

Check the backlinks to the Amazon page you're competing with and start building some solid links. Think quality over quantity.

Track progress on your keywords, keep good records and adjust over time.

Thanks for that. The page has 7 backlinks and hasn't been crawled yet, but its number one for the keyword. The page is a "listmania" page on amazon, not sure what that is. I'm guessing the custom lists reviewers make?

This doesn't seem like massive comp to me...but yes it is amazon. My seo skills are limited. I use seo presser on mY wordpress sites to make sure everything is as optimized to MY knowledge and MANUALLY post links to about 30 blogs (quite a few edu's and stuff like blogger, squidoo etc) no spam programs.

They're pretty similar to any other site. Sure, they're an authority site, but chances are they don't have a ton of backlinks. They're ranking due to their authority. With good backlinks and proper on-page SEO you can outrank them.

A little trick, though, it to add a video to your page. Which should get Google to show a screenshot of your video in the SERPs. This can help draw some attention away from the Amazon links.

Not all of Amazon's pages have the same ranking power. You have to analyze the backlinks for the page you are trying to outrank for a particular KW.

For example, Amazon has category/subcategory pages that show very low backlinks, but are SEOd on-page + internally well enough to break a newbie's back.
