How long does it typically take backlinks to get indexed such as:

Directory listings
Article Submission
Link wheels

Its always depends on the nature of website, High PR forums and Link wheels are so much SEO friendly so that links get fewer time to get index by search engines. Directory links takes little time may be weeks or months to get index by search engines.

I have done a link wheel and it's been a month with maybe one or two backlinks from it. Is that normal?

You can get backlinks indexed quicker to major search enigines by pinging your backlinks use ping services.

It all depends of the website. PR, SERP, Domain age and authority. Links from high quality websites may get indexed within 10 minutes.

If you work with quality websites which have good reputation..you have more chance to get indexed more often. You need to change your content more often..doing so you will invite googlebot to your website.

I think it's really difficult to say, as there is no particular time when Google will crawl the link and index accordingly. I think here the type of website can be responsible also where you're posting your websites' link. A website that gets updated frequently with content and others, posting your link over there can be more effective and your link might get indexed first.

Lower quality links will take a lot longer to get indexed. Sometimes they need a little push. (Ping, backlinks to them, etc.)

Higher quality backlinks will usually get indexed pretty fast. So I tend to leave them alone.

I agree, pinging and creating RSS feeds can definitely accelerate the crawling process, and for Web 2.0 properties or article links, you can also do a smaller aa SB blast.

Each type of back link will take its own time. but there are some good methods to have your link pinged. One of the best tips I had was to book mark the link and then ping the book mark. seems to work every time for me. or you can be patient and let Google find your links all by itself.

I think maximum 2 months. In my opinion there is no point of pinging your backlinks. It looks more normal when they get indexed by google naturally.
