Backlink Distribution

Perhaps a warrior with some large site experience could help me out. I have a 90+ page site and another 150+ page site that I need to start building links for; but I am not sure the best method of link building for larger sites.

These 2 started out as "hobby" sites I toyed around with covering niches I found personally interesting. My on page SEO is tight, but due to the relative size of the sites and that fact that I never took them seriously I completly ignored link building on my part.

I was at first amused when I started getting a few cents in the adsense account from these two. Fast forward a couple years and these two started securing a check from google every other month during the summer. In light of this the significant other has given me simple marching orders, "time to make some real money on these two."

So I have two lager sites in need of some quality link building, which I plan on doing. I am a bit nervous about screwing up these sites by improperly building links.

Each site is built in a traditional tier style:

Homepage (lets say it's "Ovens")
Tier 1 pages (types of ovens, ie. "Electric Ovens; Gas Ovens; Convection Ovents etc..)
Tier 2 pages linked to Tier 1 pages and nav bar ( Individual brands and models, oven maintenance, best oven recipes etc...)

Is it best to build a bunch of links to my homepage? I dont think that would look too natural to Google to have a ton of links to the home page. I also wonder what number of links is reasonable, and at what rate they should be added to sites of this size.

To me it seems logical to distribute link building across my pages from sources closely related to the page topic. If I have a tough time I would consider buying or trading some links from related quality sites. This is how I would link build to much smaller keyword based sites.

For those of you that manage larger sites please let me know if I am heading in the right direction.
