Default Google dance or Google slap?

Hey guys,

I'd like to get some opinions on what might be happening with my rankings.

Since August of this year, I've utilized a mix of SENUKE and high PR blog comments to promote 36 keywords for my ecommerce site. Up until this past weekend, my rankings have been improving fairly steadily. From not being ranked, we've been able to rank 3 keywords onto the first page and another 10-15 or so onto the second page. We were at this stage for perhaps two to three weeks.

Two weeks ago, I purchased a BH2 package for two keywords that have been ranked ~15 for over a month. This past weekend, my rankings for all but 3 keywords have dropped out of the top 100. The 3 in question include the 2 I provided to BH2 and have all dropped in rankings significantly, down to 40, 80 and 90.

The site is 8 months old but has not experienced this sort of movements in rankings previously. Is this the Google dance? I was always under the impression that the dance happened way earlier, as keywords first begin to become ranked.

I have not received any notice from Google. Webmaster tools shows that impressions are now half of what they used to be.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

It very well could be the "google dance". It seems that anytime you start adding large amounts of low quality backlinks, you will likely see your site bounce all over the place for a while. Profile links in particular will tend to do this until Google (usually) decides to disregard the links altogether and then your back at square one. I would back off the link building for a while, unless you have some high PR links to keep feeding at a steady pace.

Hey!!

What you say makes sense. However, I'm hearing conflicting (not surprisingly) advice on what to do. A lot of folks say just to keep doing what you're doing, which is a combination of high quality and low quality links (obviously more of the low quality type since it's more automated).

You, however, suggest just sticking with the higher quality links. Have you had experience with different results using different methods to get out of the dance?

Thanks again for the input.

Your site is fairly young in age. I bet after your site gets some time under its belt it will level out. In my opinion Google is still trying to figure out what you are doing before they can justify ranking you so high.

The reason for your fall could be the package you have purchased.

I believe Google has recognised your optimization practice and this is why it has dropped your rankings.
