Common SEO Mistakes

The following is a brief list of items web designers, web developers, and web optimizers should try to avoid when performing SEO on a website:

1) Splash pages:

Not only splash pages are bad for SEO, it’s also high on the usability NO list. Take this one step further, sometimes these pages are 100% flash, making it impossible for search engines to spider the page, and follow the link.

2) Flash Menus that can’t be spidered:

Many designers make this mistake by using Flash menus such as those fade-in/out and animated menus. Yep, sometimes they look the business, but they can’t be seen by the search engines; and thus the links in the Flash menu will not be followed.

3) Image and Flash Content:

Dont embed important content (such as target keywords) in Flash and images

4) Ajax heavy sites

Dont try to impress too much, specifically by deploying massive Ajax features (particularly for navigation purposes), as this is a big SEO mistake.

5) Unfriendly URLs:

Most blog or CMS platforms have a friendly URL feature built-in, however, not every blogger is taking advantage of this. Friendly URL’s are good for both your human audience and the search engines. The URL is also an important spot where your keywords should appear.

This is well heard news that flash is helping in no way for SEO work. the last point is exactly right most of the us have no clear idea about Friendly URL. We have to be aware in this point.

One more addition to those mistakes I would like to add is the not paying attention to websites pages structure. It is very important in the long run to have sensible and keyword optimized pages with good website structure. This won't only help search engines but also the usability.

The mistakes which you have given above are good but here I want to add some more mistakes and they are as bellow :

1. Aim the incorrect keywords in the website.
2. Write the duplicate contents in the topics.
3. Build the flash based website and promote it on the Internet.
4. Doing Link building to get the traffic and get high PR in the search engines.
5. Use only Images in the Title as a link.

Some great points well made. I would just like to ask about mistake number 4. Why do you consider building links to get traffic a mistake?

I would like to add several:

1. Concentrating too much on meta tags
2. Setting up a free hosted blog
3. Not linking to your top pages with your top terms on your home page
4. Doing too much internal linking
5. Cannibalizing organic search with PPC
6. Confusing causation with correlation
7. Not using a variety of anchor text
8. Submitting to the social sites from a non power user account
