hi,
keyword optimization is a mix of both art and science where you select a specific set of keywords which you want your website to rank for in the search engines. if this is not done correctly then your website will not rank in the search engines which means no traffic to your website.

you can do a search in Google "Google Adwords Keyword Tool", it's a FREE tool that Google offers for users to do Keyword Research.

keyword optimization is choosing a keyword to rank for and making it the pure focus of your website or articles like when you do seo on the keyword, like H1, H2, H3, keyword being in first sentence in first paragraph, and in the last sentence in the last paragraph
