Default Indexing WP pages - which plugin to use?

Hey there everybody,

I'm about to set up a WP blog on which I have special static pages that I'd like not to be indexed.

I googled quite far actually and I seem to understood that "Robots meta" is the plugin I'm searching - that is to say "index this, leave this out, follow there, don't follow this".

Am I right? Does this plugin leave out specific static pages I tell him to bypass? Are there other plugins that do this work?

Advices are welcome!

Gabriele

Hi Gabriele,

When you say "static pages", what do you mean exactly? Are these WP pages or HTML ones? Any particular reason for those pages NOT to be indexed? Cause if you want them away from public eyes, you can always create a subdomain with same theme and block SE's across it.

Just an idea, but I'll wait for your explanations to understand what could work better for you.

Hi Fernando!

Well I'm talking about Wordpress, so they're not HTML. And I mean pages vs posts.

Well, think about thank you pages wih gifts!

Right, but you used the wording "static pages" and all WP ones are dynamic... but anyway I see what you're looking for.

2 Options:

One is to create the subdomain, NO Index the whole place, and create these new pages in there, something like "gifts.yoursite.com". You can even create a Subscriber User with a simple password for people to LogIn and get the goodies.

Other option is to use a plug-in.

I never test it with custom pages but guess now it's on my to-do list ahah

(Yes, everything in WP is dynamic, I maybe chose the wrong words.. maybe what I meant was static posts = pages where static = stationary on the menu bar )

However my ignorance prompts me to ask you: does that same WP installation operate on a subdomain? Or have I to install a different WP blog on the subfolder?

Create Sub-Domain / New WP Install / Install Same theme (to keep it nicely).

That plugin should do the trick, to help you add a noindex tag to specific pages - I think it would be the easiest option.

I agree that a subdomain with a fresh install of WP would do the trick. You can check the privacy on that whole install so search engines do not index that whole subdomain. I have a personal blog with pictures of my kids on it that I set up this way.

Thank you all for the ideas!

However, I'd rebump my question: is there a plugin that handles this scenario without a workaround?

Maybe the platinum seo plugin? I know that it gives you granular control over each post or page... just wondering if it will let you remove it like the menu at the top and along the side... but maybe that's a direction to head in. I use it on all my sites.

Gabriele

Take a look at the WordPress › WP Hide Post « WordPress Plugins -(yes I know it says hide posts!!) but it does hide pages from menus, search engines etc - and from what I understand you need (to hide thank you pages etc) it is the ideal solution.

Anyway thank you so much!

Please read the next paragraph regarding PAGES.

It does work - I have used it for a long time!

You mean this?

For a WordPress page, this plugin also allows you to control the visibility with two options:

Hide a page on the front page (homepage) only.
Hide a page everywhere in the blog (hiding the page in the search results is optional).

If so, well I thought he means "search results" as when you have a search box in your blog, not SERP. Am I wrong on this?

Gabriele

I may have to backtrack here after investigating this

I have looked at one site that I have had this plugin installed on for a long long time (also without any additional SEO plugin) - and the page I have marked as "no search" is, in fact, currently indexed!! Time to change it!!

On other sites I have actually installed various SEO plugins (the main one being WordPress SEO Plugin ) and I use these to edit the Robots Meta to hide pages. The marked pages on these are not indexed!

I apologise for what appears to be the wrong information regarding search results for this plugin - and I am pleased you brought it to my attention! On reflection there is no real need for this plugin anyway - as the WP Menu system can now be used to hide any pages/posts as necessary.

All the best!

Ah ahahha, that's funny!

I'm happy I helped you! But anyhow, when you say that WP menu can hide post/pages you mean a behaviour like the plugin we talked about or exactly hiding from spiders/indexing? A new feature of 3.3 version or whatelse?

I'm leaving now, I'll be back tomorrow

The All in One SEO Pack plugin, like many other SEO plugins (some, already mentioned), will allow you to prevent posts/pages from being indexed on a post-by-post/page-by-page basis.

Or you could manually exclude those pages in your robots.txt file.

I'm probably confusing you again!

What I meant was that the hide post/pages plugin is redundant really since you can:-

1/ Hide the posts/pages from the menu/navigation by using the WP menu system and

2/ Hide the posts/pages from the search engines using an SEO plugin like WordPress SEO Plugin

Hope that makes sense and thanks again!

Thanks a lot kokopelli! I'm also so ashamed, 'cause I already use All in one SEO but I set it automatically the way Gsniper taught me without even have a deeper look at it..
So thanks again!

About robot.txt.. can I setup a robot file even on a shared hosting? How robot file is linked with WP? Have you a link for all of these questions before I go googling?
